#2 The First Oiling
Beginning the first oiling as per WezV’s tutorial.
The body seems to have been quite well sanded, maybe with 320 / 400 grit so as I’m not using a sealer other than the Danish Oil, I’ve gone over it a final time with 1200 grit and maybe it’ll close the pores up slightly (possibly wishful thinking.
Moving on, let’s get that first coat of oil going! Just before this I drilled through the neck mounting holes and gave the wood a wipe down with white spirit (no naptha handy). Using a bootlace through one of the mounting holes, I’ve hung it in the shed as less people will complain about it there (apart from my seven year old who will whinge that her bicycle has been relegated to the garden!
WezV says to apply a liberal amount, give it 5 – 10 minutes, wipe off the excess and leave for 24 hours. Well, I oiled that thing for about 5 minutes straight and there was b*gger all excess – it soaked it up like a sponge! Maybe I should have used sanding sealer .. Regardless, the wood has a darker tone to it now and it’s bringing the grain out more which is cool, we’ll see what it’s like tomorrow.
